You will receive the card when you register as an asylum seeker. The card must be renewed every six months for as long as your asylum application is being processed.
If your asylum application has been rejected with final and enforceable effect, your card will not be renewed.
The card for asylum seeker is not valid proof of identity, but confirms that you can legally stay in Norway while your application is being processed. Having this card does not mean that you have permission to work in Norway.
How to renew your card
- If you live in an asylum reception centre, ask the centre's staff to send a request for a new card to the National Police Immigration Service.
- If you do not live in an asylum reception centre, contact the local police, and they will send a request for a new card to the National Police Immigration Service. This is also the case for asylum seekers living in Oslo.
Please find your local police:
Lost or stolen asylum application registration cards
If your card is lost or stolen, follow the same procedure as you would for renewal.
Renewing you card for asylum seeker takes about one week. Your card will be sent to your registered address or the asylum reception centre where you live.
If you wish to apply for asylum in Norway, you will need to register as an asylum seeker.
