Registers related to criminal proceedings

Do you want access to information the police have registered about you because you have filed a report, or been reported, offended or you are a witness in a criminal case?

The register contains information about filed reports and follow-up of criminal cases. The register provides an overview of the procedures for all criminal cases, and forms the basis for a number of statistics.

In order to gain access to the criminal case register, you must describe the matter in more detail.

You will find separate rules about the criminal case register in chapter 48 of the Police database Act.

Have you provided a DNA sample to the police and want access to the information registered about you in the DNA register?

The DNA register consists of an identity register, an investigation register and a track register. The register keeps information from DNA samples obtained in accordance with section 158 of the Criminal procedure Act and section 12 of the Police database Act.

You will find separate rules about the criminal case register in chapter 45 of the Police database Act.

Do you want access to the information the police have registered about you related to penal sanctions against you, or other measures against you, as a result of an offense?

Information from the register is normally given orally when attending your local police
district.

Information on sentences and other measures imposed as a result of offenses. Data such as
personal data, sanctions and measures, are recorded.

Information from the register forms the basis for background checks in accordance with chapter 4 of the Police database Act. 7.

As a general rule, information from the criminal records can only be given orally. If you want access to the criminal records, you will have to attend your local police district.

Do you want access to photos the police have taken of you related to a case you have been suspected or charged in, or a case you have been convicted for?

The photo register consists of an identity register, an investigation register and a track register. The register keeps photographs that have been obtained in accordance with section 160 of the Criminal procedure Act and the provisions of the Prosecution Instructions, chapter 11.

Have you provided finger prints to the police and want access to the information registered about you in the finger print register?

The finger print register consists of an identity register, an investigation register and a track register. The register keeps finger prints that have been obtained in accordance with section 160 of the Criminal procedure Act and the provisions of the Prosecution Instructions, chapter 11.

You will find separate rules about the finger print register in chapter 46 of the Police database Act.

Do you want access to personal/company information and police information registered about you related to a measure aimed at you or your company?

Personal identity and police data shall ensure that the police's processing of data related to a case, sanction and identity is linked to the right person or company.
Information from the register forms the basis for background checks in accordance with chapter 7 of the Police database Act.

Police operational service

Do you want access to information the police have registered about you because you have been in contact with the police operational center related to an incident or assignment, or you have been involved in such an incident or assignment?

Provides the police with an overview of incidents and assignments, around the clock. The register is used, among other things, to plan and carry out the operational police service in a police district and to ensure an overview of enquiries to the police.

In order to gain access to the police operational register, you must specify the time, place and event or otherwise identify the assumed registration to which you want access.

No access to the police's internal assessments and planning of service will be given. Nor is access granted to information about others, and there are special exemption rules for access to the register out of consideration for the persons reporting to the police.

Do you want access to the audio log after you have been in contact with the police operational center related to an incident or assignment?

The register contains automated and continuous recordings of communication to and from the police by telephone and other communication equipment at the police operational centers. As a general rule, information in the audio log is deleted automatically after 90 days.

In order to gain access to the audio log, you must specify the time, place and event or
otherwise identify the assumed registration to which you want access. As a general rule, access to audio log is not granted as a copy of the audio log, but as a print out or access to listen to the audio log at the police station.

Arrest and custody

Do you want access to information registered about you related to your arrest/custody?

Contains an overview of all persons placed under police arrest and their arrest records in accordance with the provisions of the Criminal procedure Act, the Immigration Act and the Police Act.

Do you want access to sound and picture after you have been placed under police arrest?

Contains recordings of sound and picture from your time in police arrest. The purpose of audio and video recordings during police arrest is to safeguard the life and health of the prisoner. As a general rule, audio and picture recordings are deleted automatically after 30 days.

Wanted and missing persons

Do you want access to information the police have registered about you or an object you own related to a wanted notice?

Contains information about nationally wanted persons and objects related to criminal
proceedings or other duties of the police.

You will find separate rules about the register for wanted persons in chapter 51 of the Police database Act.

If you or the person you are requesting access for, have been reported missing for a period of at least three months, or presumed dead, and you want access to this information.

The register contains information about the deceased, presumed deceased persons or information about unidentified bodies and body parts.

You will find separate rules about the register for missing persons in chapter 50 of the Police database Act.

Prevention and intelligence

Do you want access to information the police have registered about you related to criminal intelligence?

The register contains information registered to prevent, detect and stop criminal activity, as well as to safeguard the individual's safety. For the purpose of combating crime, the police have extensive possibilities to make exemptions from the right to access this register, following a specific assessment.

You will find separate rules about the register for criminal intelligence in chapter 47 of the Police database Act.

Do you want access to information that Økokrim has registered in connection with
information about suspicious transactions related to suspected money laundering or terrorist financing?

Register for reporting suspicious transactions related to suspected money laundering or terrorist financing. For the purpose of combating crime, Økokrim has extensive possibilities to make exemptions from the right to access this register, following a specific assessment.

You will find separate rules about the anti-money laundering register in chapter 52 of the Police database Act.

Do you want access to information the police have registered about you related to the
implementation and follow-up of the police’s welfare concerns with you as a minor and your parents?

Contains information related to the implementation and follow-up of the police's welfare concerns with minors and their parents, see the Police Act, section 13 fourth paragraph and section 2 no. 2. If the person, which petition concerns, was born before the 1st of April 1985, no information about the person in question has been registered in the register, and thus no access is granted.

If you want access to information the police have registered in the preparation of analysis reports from the national inter-agency analysis and intelligence centre related to the prevention and combating of financial crime.

Register for the national inter-agency analysis and intelligence centre relating to the
prevention and combating of economic crime. For the purpose of combating crime, the police have extensive possibilities to make exemptions from the right to access this register, following a specific assessment.

Border and Immigration

Do you want access to information the police have registered about you related to
assignments pursuant to the Immigration Act / problem solving at the immigration center?

Used by the police immigration unit to solve their problems pursuant to the Immigration Act, and for solving problems at the police immigration center.

You will find separate rules about the police immigration register in chapter 56 of the Police database Act.

Do you want access to air passenger information the police have registered about you related to preventing, detecting, investigating and prosecuting terrorist acts and serious crime?

The register provides an overview of passenger information collected from and disclosed by airline companies. The data is processed to help prevent, detect, investigate and prosecute terrorist acts and serious crime.

Do you want access to information the police have registered about you related to border control and/or immigration control?

The register contains information registered related to the police border control and
immigration control in the territory.

You will find separate rules about the border and territory control register in chapter 5 of the Border Act.

Passport and National ID cards

Do you want access to information registered about you related to your passport?

The passport register includes names, signatures, social security numbers, biometric facial photos, height, eye color, hair color, place of birth, mailing address, passport number, issuing authority, date of issue and expiration. In addition, other information may be recorded if necessary for the management of the register and issuing of a passport.

The purpose of the passport register is to have a comprehensive overview of issued
Norwegian passports, as well as Norwegian passports that are astray. The collection of data is authorized by section 8 of the Passport Act and section 5-2 of the Passport and ID Card Act.

Information about previously issued passports can be kept in the passport register. Information shall not be deleted as long as it is necessary for the sake of notoriety, history and further control.

Do you want access to information registered about you related to your national ID card?

The ID card register includes names, signatures, social security number, biometric facial photos, height, eye color, hair color, serial number and information about card loss and card withdrawal.

The purpose of the ID card register is to have a comprehensive overview of issued Norwegian ID cards, as well as Norwegian ID cards that are astray. The collection of data is authorized by section 9 of the ID card Act and section 5-3 of the Passport and ID card Act.

Information about previously issued national ID cards can be kept in the ID card register.

Information shall not be deleted as long as it is necessary for the sake of notoriety, history and further control.

Authorizations

Do you want access to information registered about you due to you owning a firearm or applying for a firearms permit?

In the firearms register, information that is necessary to control firearms and parts of the firearm, as well as granted firearms permits, can be registered.

The firearms register consists of information about which firearms and firearm parts are registered in you name, your applications for acquisition and possession, disposal and import and export.

Do you want access to information registered about you related to your driver's license being confiscated?

The register contains information about your confiscated driver’s license (not the demerit point register) and the status of your confiscated driver’s license, with information about the reason and the conditions for getting it back. This is a national system for registering confiscated driver’s licenses.

Employee relationship

Do you want access to information registered about you related to you being or having been employed, or searching or having searched for a job, in the police?

The police have information about former and current employees, as well as information about people who have performed work or services for the police.

How to request access to personal data

The police have three different ways of requesting access. In the form, choose which registers you want access to personal data.

Processing, response and appeal

The police will respond within 30 days. The response will be sent to your registered
address. You can appeal against the police's decision, if you believe the police are processing personal data about you in a way that violate the privacy legislation.

Appeal pursuant to the Police database Act

If you wish to appeal against the police's decision, the appeal must be submitted within three weeks after the decision is made.

Decisions pursuant to the Police database Act may be appealed to the Police Directorate. The appeal must be submitted to the body that made the decision. The appeal must be sent to thepostal service at the relevant body. In addition, you can ask the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet) to check that the information about you has been processed in accordance with the law, and that the rules on access have been complied with.

Appeal pursuant to the Personal data Act

Decisions made by the police pursuant to the Personal data Act may be appealed to the Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet).
