AI4Interviews Nominated for Europol Excellence Award in Innovation

Policing faces major changes. Technology will become a key to the future of Investigations. The innovation project AI4Interviews has been selected as one of three finalists in the category "Innovative Technical Solution at the Europol Excellence Awards in Innovation."

AI4Interviews is true teamwork. Forensic investigators Kjeld Hendrik Helland-Hansen and Oddvar Moldestad from the West Police District have been key drivers in adopting and developing the forensic solution. Here, equipped with voice-controlled head-mounted cameras, they are ready for action.

The Crime Scene Investigation CSI solutions developed by AI4Interviews replaces fragmented and manual processes with a holistic, modular chain – from capturing audio and video at the crime scene, through quality-assured transcription, to a fully structured forensic report.

What Makes the Solution Groundbreaking?

AI4Interviews combines AI, robotics and specialized equipment – such as a voice-controlled head camera with live streaming – into one integrated CSI solution that can:

Live-stream from the scene to obtain expert support (via the voice-controlled head camera)
Register verbal observations directly on site (via the same device)
Use AI for automatic speech-to-text transcription
Generate reports that structure the material into standardized forensic documentation (CSI Assistant)
Leverage robotics to consolidate multiple recordings into a single report – or one-to-one reports
Enable quality checks and refinements by voice or text, allowing investigators to finalize reports efficiently

This transforms documentation, streamlines case analysis, and frees up experts to focus on what matters most: the investigation.

- We strongly believe these solutions can strengthen legal safeguards, reduce costs, and deliver faster results, say the forensic duo from the Western Police District, Oddvar Moldestad and Kjeld Hendrik Helland-Hansen.

Teamwork at the Core

The nomination is the result of close collaboration between police, academia, and industry – with contributions from NTNU, the University of Agder, the Netherlands Forensic Institute, London Metropolitan Police, and several Norwegian technology companies.

- Innovation is a team sport. As I see it, there are two main reasons we were nominated: promising CSI solutions and a team that delivers at full speed. If these solutions are rolled out across the police, the efficiency gains will be remarkable, says Bente Skattør, Project Manager for AI4Interviews at the Oslo Police District.

For those working on the solution, the nomination brings both motivation and strive:

- The pace of development is incredible. Being noticed internationally gives us extra energy to keep pushing forward, say Jonas Båfjord Holten and Silje Damman from PIT’s Robotics Team.

PIT language model specialist Thomas Beka adds:

- We’ve achieved strong results in speech-to-text technology, and it’s very encouraging to see it put to use in policing.

A Milestone for Future Policing

Police Superintendent Grete Metlid, who heads the Joint Unit for Intelligence and Investigation (FEE) in the Oslo Police District and chairs the AI4Interviews steering committee, is convinced of the project’s importance:

- Trust is the foundation of all policing. By automating time-consuming report writing, we free up capacity for what matters most: fighting crime and conducting investigations. The international recognition of our solutions gives us energy for the next steps.

Award Ceremony in The Hague

In the finals, AI4Interviews faces two competitors: Cross-Match Generator (Germany) and ERBIUM: Advanced Robotic Multimodal System for Non-Destructive Forensic Material Analysis (Czech Republic).

The nomination confirms that Norwegian forensici CSI innovation is at the forefront – and that the combination of technology and cross-border collaboration provides tangible benefits for investigations.
