Politiet har siktet en person etter at lasteskip gikk på grunn/Police Charge Individual Following Grounding of Cargo Vessel

Den siktede er en mann i 30-årene fra Ukraina som tjenestegjorde som 2. styrmann om bord under den aktuelle seilasen.

-Det er vakthavende navigatør på hendelsestidspunktet som er siktet. Han har i avhør forklart at han sovnet alene på vakt, noe som medførte at skipet grunnstøtte, sier Kjetil Bruland Sørensen, påtaleansvarlig i saken i Trøndelag politidistrikt

-Det er i løpet av fredagen gjennomført avhør av deler av mannskapet som var om bord. - Fokuset i etterforskningen er å kartlegge hendelsesforløpet og finne ut hvordan dette kunne skje, samt å få kartlagt om bemanningen på broen var i samsvar med gjeldende regelverk, sier Bruland Sørensen.

Videre undersøkes det om reglene om arbeids- og hviletid er overholdt om bord på skipet. På grunnlag av dette har skipets kaptein rutinemessig fått status som mistenkt i saken. Politiet har også innhentet relevante skipsdokument og vært i kontakt med Sjøfartsdirektoratet.

Forsvarer for siktede er advokat Torfinn Svanem.

Det presiseres at det i denne saken ikke anses at det er aktuelt med varetektsfengsling.

Det Kystverket som har ansvaret for flytting av skipet.

On Thursday, 22 May, a tanker vessel ran aground off Byneset, near Trondheim. The ship had 16 individuals on board; no injuries were reported.

The police have launched an investigation, and one individual has now been formally charged with negligent navigation under Section 14 of the Ship Safety and Security Act.

The charged is a Ukrainian man in his thirties who was serving as Second Officer on board during the voyage in question.

"The individual charged was the officer on watch at the time of the incident. During questioning, he stated that he fell asleep while on duty alone, which led to the vessel running aground," says Kjetil Bruland Sørensen, the prosecutor in Trøndelag Police District.

"On Friday, parts of the crew on board were interviewed. The focus of the investigation is to establish the sequence of events and determine how this incident could occur, as well as to assess whether the bridge was manned in accordance with applicable regulations," Bruland Sørensen added.

Further inquiries are being made into whether the rules regarding working and rest hours were adhered to on board the vessel. As part of standard procedure, the ship’s captain has been given the status of suspect in the case. The police have also obtained relevant ship documentation and have been in contact with the Norwegian Maritime Authority.

The defence counsel for the charged is solicitor Torfinn Svanem.

It is emphasised that remand in custody will not be revelant in this case.

The Norwegian Coastal Administration is responsible for the relocation of the vessel.
