How to apply for or submit notification of Norwegian citizenship

1. Applying for or submitting notification of Norwegian citizenship

   To apply for or submit notification of Norwegian citizenship, you first register your application online at the Directorate of Immigration's website. Here you book an appointment with the police, and can find where you are going to meet to hand in the documentation.

2. Bring all your documents to your appointment with the police

   Only when the police have checked your documents and the information you provide will your application be formally submitted. 

   Remember to bring your police certificate of conduct. You will be informed of what other documents you must bring when you fill in the application form at the Directorate of Immigration's website. 

3. Processing your application

   Your application will be processed both by the police and the Directorate of Immigration. The police check the documents and the information you have submitted. The Directorate of Immigration decides whether or not your application for citizenship will be granted.

4. Norwegian citizenship decision

   If you are granted Norwegian citizenship, a letter with the decision will be sent to your digipost account or by post by the Directorate of Immigration.

   With this letter, you can book an appointment to obtain a Norwegian passport at a passport and ID office.  You must bring the letter with the decision and a valid ID document to your appointment.
