You can ask for protection in Norway if you have been the victim of harassment and abuse (persecution) in your home country. This is called claiming asylum. You can also claim asylum if you are afraid you will be persecuted in your home country.
You must be in Norway or at the Norwegian border to claim asylum.
Who cannot claim asylum?
You cannot claim asylum if you want to come to Norway to work or study. The need for protection is the only reason for which asylum is granted. If you want to come to Norway for any other reason, you must apply to the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) for a residence permit.
How to claim protection
Renew your grant of asylum (protection)
Contact your local police for an appointment to renew your asylum status. To keep all your rights, you should book an appointment at least two months before your residence permit expires. You can apply for renewal if you have already been given a residence permit because you need protection.
