How to claim protection

1. Contact the police when you arrive in Norway

   It is important that you contact the police as soon as you arrive in Norway. You can also apply for asylum in person at the offices of the National Police Immigration Service in Råde.

2. Asylum seeker card

   Once the police have registered you as an asylum seeker, they will issue you with a special asylum seeker card. The asylum seeker card is not an identity document. In other words, it is not valid proof of your identity. The card confirms that you are allowed to stay in Norway while your application for asylum is being considered. An asylum seeker card does not give you the right to work in Norway.

3. A place to stay

   You will be given a medical check, something to eat and overnight accommodation. You will stay at the arrivals centre for a few days. Then you will be transferred to an asylum reception centre. The arrivals centre's address is Mosseveien 58, 1640 Råde.

   Are you under 18 and an asylum seeker?

   Someone will be appointed to represent you if you are under 18 years of age and you have arrived in Norway alone (without a parent or guardian) to claim asylum. This representative will look after your interests. He or she will also be present when you are registered.

   Duty of confidentiality

   Everyone who works for the National Police Immigration Service (both employees and interpreters) has a duty of confidentiality. That means we cannot pass any information about your application for asylum to the authorities in your home country. Information about you will only be used by the UDI when they consider your application for asylum.

4. Decisions

   Your application for asylum will be decided by the UDI.

   If you are granted asylum, you have to book an appointment with the police at the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) website. The residence card confirms that you are allowed to stay temporarily in Norway.

   You must return to your home country if your application for asylum has been finally rejected. The police will deport you if you do not go voluntarily. That means you will be sent back by force.

5. How to renew your asylum seeker card

   You must renew your asylum seeker card every six months while you are waiting for your application for asylum to be decided.

   • If you are staying at an asylum reception centre:
     Ask the centre to send a request for a new asylum seeker card to the National Police Immigration Service on your behalf.
   • If you are staying at a private address:
     Contact your local police station. The police will send a request for a new asylum seeker card to the National Police Immigration Service on your behalf.
   • If you are staying at a private address in Oslo:
     You can contact the National Police Immigration Service's front desk in person.

   How long it will take

   It usually takes a week for the National Police Immigration Service to renew asylum seeker cards. The new card will be sent to your local police station or the asylum reception centre where you are living.

   Final rejection of asylum application

   If your asylum application has been finally rejected, your asylum seeker card will not be renewed.

   Lost your asylum seeker card?

   If your asylum seeker card has been lost or stolen, you can get a replacement. Follow the same steps as when you renew your card in the normal way.
